Combs Family

I know fall is here, but I just had to share this summer shoot! We had to reschedule this session a few times because of rain, and then on the morning of our session it was 90 degrees by 9:00am! Thankfully the Combs family had picked the perfect location for a hot, session- the lake! We explored the park, and then when everyone got too hot, we just hopped right in the lake.

Having three little ones for family pictures can always be challenging, and my favorite thing about the Combs family is how mom and dad always take it in stride.  They never stress if someone is taking a little longer to warm up, or needs a break, or at this session- just wants to jump in the lake! It keeps our sessions lighthearted and fun, and allows us to really capture the personalities of their kiddos.

I am so thankful I have been able to capture so many memories with this family over the years.  These three little cuties each have big personalities, and it has been so much fun to watch them grow and develop.  I hope you got to spend many more days together at the lake this summer, Combs family!

Our Maternity Photos + Taking a Break

I know I keep saying it, but can someone please pinch me! After all of the maternity pictures I have captured over the past 5 years, I cannot believe that I am sharing our own bump photo shoot! We captured these pictures in Birmingham at Quarton Lake, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to photograph.  No, we did not secretly find out we are having a boy and decide to announce it with these pictures :) Blue just seems a whole lot more gender neutral than pink, and for all of you ladies who have tried to find a maternity dress that you love you know that when you find one, the color is the last thing you are worried about!

These pictures mean so much to us, and I get a little giddy just looking at them.  My favorite part is how they capture the way Ted looks at me and my bump every single day.  It still surprises me each day when he wants to spend time with the baby, just talking to him or her and having his hands on my stomach.  I take for granted all of the time the baby and I spend together, and then I remember that Ted misses us during the day! He doesn't get to spend every single moment with this growing babe.  I am just so glad I have these photos to remember the way he looks at us.

This past week was my last week of scheduled photo shoots.  I am taking this week to get caught up on editing and sending out galleries and then I will be off on maternity leave.  I have spent a lot of time preparing my business and my heart for this leave.  I am really looking forward to taking 2 months to step away from photographing and diving completely into mamahood.  I plan to check e-mail very sparingly, and to do my best to fully unplug during this time.  I also decided to take a break from work on my social media channels.  Instead I will be sharing what is going on in the moment with our family.  So I will just go ahead and apologize nowfor the baby spam!

If you are interested in scheduling a fall shoot please e-mail me your availability.  I will get back to e-mails once a week, and would love to see your family once I am back to work!  As always, we cannot thank you enough for your constant support of my business and our growing family.  We feel so loved and encouraged by each of you, and are so excited to share this next season of life with you!

Combs Family

I am loving fun, cuddly in home lifestyle sessions. There is something so beautiful about capturing a family in their home.  In the place where they do life together and make the majority of their memories.  It feels really intimate and real, and I think that is why I think they are such a unique way to capture the essence of who you are as a family. I highly recommend them- especially as we move into the colder months here in Michigan.

But anyways back to the story of the Combs family.  At the beginning of a session I will typically chat with mom and dad about expectations for the session.  I will let them know how I plan to organize the shoot and then ask them if there are any specific must have shots. I have photographed the Combs family a bunch of times in the past and I should have known that Lauren's response would be easy and carefree. When I asked if there were any specific shots she hoped to get out of the shoot she said, 'Just the kids playing! I don't even mind if they look at the camera or not, let's just photograph us hanging out at home.' A photographer's dream response!

Well funny thing, her kids are so use to seeing me around them with a camera that they were slightly confused when we got out the toy cars and just started playing.  Their oldest kind of looked at me like, so are you going to ask me to smile now? Should I look at you? It was the sweetest thing, because he knows the routine! After awhile they warmed up to the idea of just hanging out, reading books, and swinging in the backyard.  And I am loving how these images capture how their family does life every day.  Thank you for letting me capture your everyday story, Combs Family!

Calista- Class of 2018

Cali was one of the sweetest high school seniors I have photographed.  She made conversation easy and had a calm, kind demeanor about her.  Cali's mom came along for the shoot and it was clear that the two have a special relationship.  Mom quietly watched behind me with admiration as we moved from spot to spot. The two shared with about Cali's plans for college next year, the fun family vacation they had just returned home from and Cali's love for snowboarding.

We met in downtown Birmingham for Cali's session and the location fit her personality just perfectly.  It was one of those beautiful evenings, when the sun sets slowly and as the city lights come out everything turns the prettiest shades of soft, muted colors. We found some really cool ally ways that I hadn't used for pictures before. Thankfully Cali's was a trooper because it just seems that all of the coolest spots are always located just a few feet away from dumpsters.  Totally worth it though for the awesome colors of the brick and bright doors that we stumbled across! I am really loving this session and the way it shows off Cali's cool, playful personality.  Have the greatest senior year, Cali!

Miller Family

Sometimes when I show up at a session I have no idea what to expect. I have only e-mailed back and forth with the client and the most information I know about them is what city they live in and how old their little ones are.  This was the case with the Miller family! And it is so fun to see how much you can learn about the family in one hour together.  You leave feeling like old friends!  When I met up with the Miller family we realized we knew a whole bunch of the same people, both loved traveling and I even got to meet their pup at the end of our shoot.

Booth Park in Birmingham is such a great place to shoot with young families.  Everything is condensed so we don't have to do a whole bunch of moving around to get varied backdrops. The park is typically relatively quiet once you get away from the playground, and there are nearby bribing options (a.k.a ice cream shops) if your children are old enough for that! I am so not above bribing! There are also usually plenty of ducks, squirrels and birds around to keep kids interested in exploring more of the park.

Little Jack was one of the smiliest little guys I have ever photographed.  If I sang the ABCs he smiled all the way from A to Z.  He couldn't stop laughing if I put his shoe on my head and he was wasn't shy at all.  I have to say the happiest he was was when his puppy joined us.  He adored his dog and it was so funny to see the two together.  His puppy just sat patiently next to his baby and Jack just wanted to hold his puppy's tail.  His puppy didn't bark or move once, he just let the little guy go ahead and hold onto his tail! So sweet! Thank you for letting me into your family to capture these memories, Miller family!

Eldridge Family

I had a chance to meet these two little guys last summer when they were in town visiting, and we did a big cousin picture for their grandparents.  In all of the chaos that comes along with cousin pictures, I didn't really get to spend much one on one time with these two little guys.  I was so happy when their sweet momma contacted me and asked if I was available for some family pictures.  Their family has recently moved back to Michigan, so it was fun getting to chat with them about the adjustment and be able to capture a few image of this new chapter of life for them.

We met at Booth Park in Birmingham on a very rainy Thursday morning. Luckily, the rain cleared about an hour before our session and the clouds provided the perfect blanket from the summer heat.  As long as we avoided all of the puddles, we were able to explore the park and had the whole place completely to ourselves!  These little guys didn't seem to mind having me tag along for their family adventure.  They were both so outgoing, willing to sit in front of the camera all by themselves, and each little guy displaying his own personality for the pictures.  This family truly loves being together and it was such an honor to capture the love they share.  Welcome to Michigan, Eldridge Family!

Baby Colin

Welcome to the family Colin Richard!  This family was waiting to be surprised to see if they would be adding another brother or a sister to the family, and Colin made 3 boys! Whoa! Kyle is my older brother, and he grew up with 2 boys directly above him in our family, so I have to think he and Colin will have a special bond.  Both knowing how it feels to be the youngest of three boys right in a row.  This family is not only gorgeous but so thoughtful and caring.  We live close to them and I always look forward to date nights and stopping in to play with the boys during impromptu dinners together.  Living close to family is such a blessing for Ted and me, and living extra close to this family makes me feel particularly lucky.

Colin's older brothers Parker and Cooper are in love with anything sports related, so no doubt they are going to be so excited to be adding to their soccer team and golfing foursome. Colin is going to have to grow tough quickly to hang with this rowdy bunch!  After our family pictures Colleen let the older two boys go play in the backyard while I did newborn pictures with Colin right inside the house.  The boys still wanted to be close to the action, and kept coming over to the sliding glass door and knocking and waving to their new brother, showing him their construction tools, and yelling loud hellos through the door.  It didn't phase Colin and he slept right through their attempts to wake him up.  Trust me, sleeping through anything is going to be a wonderful trait as you grow up in a loud and crazy house, Colin!

Thanks for always inviting me into these special moments with your family, Millers.  We certainly love you all a whole bunch!

Henry turns 1

A while ago I wrote a blog post about why I chose to be a lifetime photographer and why I think finding a lifetime photographer is important for your family.  If you missed it you can check it out here.  This family right here is a perfect reason why I love getting the chance to be a family's lifetime photographer.

I met Sarah and Ben when they were expecting baby Henry.  I photographed their maternity session and then a few weeks later I was able to photograph Henry as a newborn.  We captured his 6 month photographs later that year and now he is one!  It has been such a pleasure watching him grow over the past year and getting the chance to catch up with his mom and dad along the way.  I love that this family knows who they are looking for when they show up for a shoot, what to expect from the session, we can joke about past shoots, catch up on Ben's job, and they even ask about my past adventures.  It makes the whole process so much more enjoyable and comfortable for everyone.

So enough about lifetime photography (even though I think it's the best!) and back to this sweet family! Sarah and Ben were prepping for their little guy's first birthday later that week, so we captured a few photographs of them together to celebrate.  Henry was so enamored with his new surroundings that he tried to hold out on us with those smiles.  He just careful took in everything at the park- from a group of high school kids that offered to blow bubbles for him to all of the dogs out for their evening walk.  Thank goodness, Mom and Dad knew how to pull those big laughs out of him!

Henry's favorite part of the shoot had to be his cake!  That cake was almost too gorgeous to let him smash, but once he saw it there was no holding him back!  For someone who had never tasted cake, he certainly knew that he liked this new sweet treat! Happy first birthday, Henry!
